DRAPER, Utah — A new Utah State Prison is set to open in 2022, and the current site of the prison—in the area known locally as "The Point of the Mountain"—is poised to become one of the most significant economic development opportunities in the state's history.

The 700-acre piece of state-owned land will be called "The Point," and planning commission officials hope the public will provide input to help guide the process of redevelopment at the site.

"Our challenge here is to develop something that provides a place to live, work and even for entertainment and recreation, not just for what it will look like five years from now, but potentially in the future," said V. Lowry Snow, co-chair of The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority.

Snow is part of a commission tasked with overseeing the planning, management and development at The Point. The board is working with Steve Kellenberg, a planning expert, to create a master plan for the site.

"Kellenberg has worked on large-scale developments around the world, including the Middle East, China, Singapore and South America," a news release from The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority said.

Members of the public are encouraged to take part in an online survey as the plans for The Point continue to develop.
