Provo officer shot during shootout awake, in good spirits

PROVO, Utah — The Provo police officer shot twice by a suspect acting erratically Thursday is awake and in good spirits a day later, according to police officials.

Officer John Oseguera was shot in the lower extremities during a confrontation at the Vista Ridge apartments. He underwent surgery after arriving at Utah Valley Hospital, but not before he called his wife to tell her he loved her.

Officials say Oseguera's surgery went went well and that he is recovering nicely.

Oseguera and Officer Harlan Schmitt responded to 911 calls placed by witnesses who said a man was acting erratically at the building located at 900 East and 80 South.

The man began shooting at the officers with two semi-automatic weapons. After being hit by gunfire himself, the suspect was apprehended and taken into custody.

Schmitt was not wounded in the confrontation. The unidentified suspect was transported to the hospital, although his condition is unknown.
