SALT LAKE CITY — A proposed constitutional amendment would offer a tax break for homeowners who take steps to mitigate wildfires.
Senate Joint Resolution 10, sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Dan Hemmert, R-Orem, gives a property tax exemption for the cost of wildfire prevention efforts. The bill was introduced in the Utah State Legislature on Friday.
It is in response to catastrophic wildfires that have hit Utah in recent years, destroying homes, cabins and other property.
A proposed constitutional amendment requires approval of voters. If it passes the Utah State Legislature this session, it would go before voters later this year.
