Police arrest suspect following shooting in Vernal

VERNAL, Utah — Vernal Police have arrested a suspect in connection to a shooting that sent one man to the hospital.

According to the Vernal Police Department, dispatch received a call to send medical personnel to respond in the area of 250 W and 400 N in downtown vernal for an unknown reason.

When officers arrived, they immediately determined that an adult male had been shot several times. Medical personnel provided care and transported the man to a local hospital.

Officers were able to identify a potential suspect in the shooting and a group of officers was sent to locate the suspect.

Approximately half an hour later, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near 700 W and 450 S when the suspect fled the vehicle and ran into a nearby residence on 500 S.

Over the next two hours, police attempted to negotiate with the suspect. The man eventually exited the residence and was uncooperative with commands and made his way back to the home. As he was going into the home, a police K9 was released and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was given medical treatment at the scene and transported to a local hospital to be treated for bite-related injuries.

500 S was closed during the incident and surrounding homes were asked to shelter-in-place for safety purposes.

No identities or condition of the victim have been released.
