WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A man faces more than a dozen felony charges in connection with a shooting that left one person injured at an apartment complex in West Valley City Sunday night.

Police arrested 18-year-old Casey Jack Demie after a brief foot pursuit outside Overlook Point Apartments, at 4635 S 2890 W.

Officers responded to the apartment complex after receiving several reports of gunshots shortly before 10 p.m.

According to a probable cause statement, a shooting victim arrived at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray and was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The victim told investigators he was running away and trying to get in his car to flee the area when he was shot.

Officers arrived at the apartment complex and found a dark sedan that matched a description given by the victim.

"Officers made contact with the occupants of the vehicle and a male, later identified as Casey Demie ran from the vehicle. After a short foot pursuit officers were able to safely take him into custody," the probable cause statement said. "[Demie] initially told officers the victim shot at him first and he fired back."

Police said they found Demie in possession of two 9mm handguns, two small drug baggies and a marijuana cartridge. One of the handguns had an extended, 30-round magazine with 19 bullets in it, the statement said.

Officers found 11 spent 9mm casings at the scene.

Demie faces 10 felony counts of discharge of a firearm, two felony counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a misdemeanor count of failure to stop at the command of a police officer, a misdemeanor count of interference with an arresting officer and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Demie was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail early Monday morning and a Salt Lake City District Court judge has ordered him to be held without bail.
