15-year-old identified as person killed in South Jordan house explosion

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — A 15-year-old boy has been identified as the person found dead after a house explosion rocked a South Jordan neighborhood Wednesday.

The City of South Jordan only identified the boy as a student at Bingham High School and did not release his name. The Jordan School District is providing counseling to families and students at the school.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and neighbors affected by this devastating incident," the city said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation,

Severe damage could be seen on the backside of the home at the house located in the area of 10500 South and 3200 West.

Crews from several agencies responded to the scene at approximately 3 p.m.

"There was smoke and flames showing and clearly based on the circumstances that we can see behind us, it appears that there was an explosion," explained South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner.

Most of the damage to the house was seen in the back of the property.

Nearby homes have been evacuated due to the explosion and some were damaged in the incident which is still under investigation.

Neighbors spent the night trying to process what had occurred.

"There's people involved, this is a family and, you know, just again, just a tragic, tragic situation here," said Brett Jenson.

Someone commenting on the FOX 13 News Facebook page said they lived near the home and said "the entire house shook."
