SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in downtown Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon.

The shooting occurred around 12:20 p.m. near 200 S. State Street, just outside the entrance to the Maverik building. SLCPD spokesman Brent Weisberg said the victim ran north on State Street after being shot, then collapsed on the ground in the parking lot behind the building.

Multiple bystanders, including an emergency room nurse, helped officers with lifesaving efforts, but the victim ultimately died at the scene. He was identified Monday as 30-year-old Gage Barrows.

The suspect, 49-year-old Farshad Hassan-Pouri, fled the scene but was later caught and arrested about two blocks away from the scene of the shooting. Weisberg said a witness actually followed the suspect while giving updates on his location to 911 operators.

The shooting is still under investigation. Weisberg said it appeared there was an argument that escalated into a fight, and then the shooting. He added that there did not appear to be an exchange of gunfire; the suspect was the only shooter.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. The relationship between the two is unknown at this time.

This is a developing story. FOX 13 News will continue to provide updates as they are made available.
