SALT LAKE CITY — The legacy of Herriman police K-9 officer Hondo continues to touch communities across Utah and his story is now reaching those across the country.

“This K9, K9 Hondo did lose his life saving the members of the community there in Herriman and Salt Lake City, so I do think he deserves some very special attention,” Carlie Romero said.

Romero works for Shield Republic, an apparel and merchandise shop based out of North Carolina, dedicated to patriotic Americans, first responders, police, military and firefighters.

A fundraiser was launched by Shield Republic on Saturday. It’s a place to purchase merch, but the price is set with the intent to donate to the funds to the agencies who have lost a loved one.

“It’s a tragedy especially in the case of k9 Hondo where he was shot doing exactly his job, which was keeping his officer safe,” Romero said.

K9 officer Hondo was shot and killed the night before Valentine’s Day. Hondo had been helping multiple agencies in their attempt to stop a local fugitive on the run when the fugitive pulled out a firearm, police shot and killed him.

After deducting the cost of advertising and manufacturing, Romero says they donate the rest of the proceeds.

The check Romero hopes to send to Herriman City Police Department will be more than $3,000.

Herriman City Police told FOX 13 that Hondo’s funeral will be announced in the next day or so.
