Missing woman's body found near St. George, death ruled homicide by police

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Police in St. George are investigating a possible murder after the body of a missing woman was found in a remote area under suspicious circumstances.

According to a press release made by the Iron County Sheriff's Office, on Aug. 23 at around 9 a.m., dispatch received a call about a body being in a remote western area of the county.

Deputies responded to the location along with crime scene technicians and found the body, which was determined to be an adult female. The press release stated that the body, "had been in the area for some time."

The body was then transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy and identification, sheriff's officials said.

Officials later identified the body as Stevie Shay Wilkerson, 26, who was reported missing from the St. George Utah area on Aug. 9.

"The circumstances surrounding the death of Wilkerson is being treated as a homicide and is being investigated by Iron County Sheriff’s Office Detectives," the press release stated.

Anyone with information about the death was asked to call 435-867-7500.

"Our thoughts are with the Wilkerson family at this time," officials wrote.
