LONE PEAK, Utah — A national scam that threatens families with violence from Mexican drug cartels has made its way to Utah.
The Lone Peak Police posted to Facebook Tuesday that a resident received a text connected to the scam that puts a scare in all who receive it.
The text purportedly came from the "Mexican Drug Cartel" and included graphic photos and accurate information about the resident's family. The threat demanded money with warnings of violence if the ransom was not paid.
"It can be scary receiving this text." the department wrote on Facebook. "This is being perpetrated from people outside the country in most cases and an empty threat used to extort money from people. If you receive this text do not engage a conversation with the scammer and notify your local law enforcement agency."
As the police say, never fall prey to the scam and alert the authorities should it be received.
