HURRICANE, Utah — A man who was airlifted to a hospital after his pickup truck submerged into Quail Creek State Park earlier this week has died.

On Tuesday afternoon, 80-year-old Doug M. Schaerrer of Lindon was inside the truck with a boat on a trailer on the boat ramp at the state park when the vehicle went backward into the water.

As it submerged, State Park Ranger Dylan Urban broke a window of the truck, pulled Schaerrer out and gave him CPR until paramedics arrived.

Schaerrer was taken to St. George Hospital via LifeFlight. He died Wednesday, according to an announcement from the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation.

Urban was evaluated for cuts and injuries from the rescue and was released a few hours later. He is expected to fully recover.

"The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation extends our condolences to the friends and family impacted by this tragedy," the press release read.

The incident is under investigation.
