MIDVALE, Utah — A man is in critical condition following an early morning shooting in Midvale.
Around 2:30 a.m. a Unified Police Officer came under fire from a suspect who had apparently fled the scene of an earlier shooting in a room at the Motel 6 near 7200 South 300 West.
UPD police had arrived in the area on an unrelated call, and were told that shots had been fired in one of the rooms.
Officers saw a man running from that room and attempted to arrest him, but he fled on foot.
He ran through several nearby parking lots, and as an officer approached a trash dumpster, the suspect allegedly popped up and fired several rounds before running off again.
The officer was not hit and did not return fire. Moments later, a witness helped officers locate and arrest the suspect.
“By a stroke of luck if you will, our SWAT team was preparing to serve a search warrant - again on a completely unrelated issue - when this call came in,” said UPD Sgt. Melody Gray. “So we had the assistance of those extra hands to come out here and search for the suspect.”
The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County jail. He will likely face multiple felony charges including attempted murder of a police officer.
Another man was located in the room where the shots were fired. He had been shot and was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
