A family-owned local bakery, Schmidt's Pastry Cottage is giving out two free loaves of bread to every household. The bakery is continuing to operate during normal business hours and has not cut back employee hours just days after dine-in restrictions for Utah restaurants were put in place.

Recently, the thought of going to the grocery stores gives people anxiety, the sight of sparse shelves is even worse. In attempts to help families provide food on the table during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shmidt's bakery has decided to offer two free loaves of bread to anyone in need.

"Everyone needs bread, the grocery stores are crowded and they're all picked over and we've set it up here so that people can come in and were being as careful as we can, keep everybody's space and when they leave.. .we give them two loaves of bread," said owner Steve Borg.

The message, one loaf per household, and the other must be given to a neighbor or person in need. Although no in-store purchase is required to receive the loaves, Borg says people are leaving behind rather generous donations saying that he was given a five hundred dollar check from a neighbor to purchase ingredients for bread.

"Two loaves of bread, you keep one and give one away and we just thought that is such an inspiring community outreach," said long time customer Lenny Goodwin. "We would encourage anyone to come here and to participate with donations, and finding a home for that bread and we will probably give both of them away," he said.

Schmidt's will stay open and handout free loaves to families for as long as they can. Loaves can be collected at any three of the locations:

1. 609 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84106,
2. 5664 S Redwood Rd, Taylorsville, UT 84123
3. 1133 S Jordan Pkwy, South Jordan, UT 84095
