PRINGLE, S.D. — A South Dakota judge ordered the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to sell a 140-acre compound in the Black Hills in order to pay a lawsuit settlement.
The FLDS church owes close to $1.7 million, and the judge found that the church tried to transfer ownership of the land to avoid paying.
The land is a 30-minute drive west of the small town of Pringle in Custer County.
Two real estate agents in the area tell FOX 13 they are aware the sale is scheduled, but they knew little more about the property. One said agents are leary of going to see the compound because of concerns about the secretive sect.
The auction is scheduled for Feb. 25 and is being overseen by the Custer County Sheriff.
