WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah — The Holly Frontier refinery in West Bountiful began supplying its customers with Tier 3 gasoline Friday.
Utah Governor Gary Herbert joined other state and local leaders at a ribbon cutting ceremony and in congratulating Holly Frontier for marking the major milestone in the quest for cleaner air.
“We’re going to be supplying the Wasatch Front with Tier 3 gasoline from this point forward,” said Michael Jennings, President and CEO of Holly Frontier. “Meaning that we’re going to be making the 10 ppm or less sulfur implicit for Tier 3.”

Tier 3 gas has less sulfur dioxide, which is a major culprit in creating the smog and haze we see on bad air quality days.
The state has been working hard for years to improve its air quality.
“This has been a big push by Governor Herbert with an attempt to try and clean up the air in the Wasatch Basin,” Jennings said. “And part of that involves motor fuels and so we’re trying to do our part to make sure that our gasoline is ultra low sulfur and meets this Tier 3 standard.”

The governor says it’s a big step in the right direction because about 45 to 50 percent of pollution we see on inversion days comes out of vehicle tailpipes.
“By producing Tier 3 fuels, and as we now have Tier 3 automobiles being rolled off the assembly line, that combination will allow us to reduce tailpipe emissions by 80 percent,” he said.
Holly Frontier says drivers won't notice a difference in the way their vehicles operate using Tier 3 gas, but they will notice a difference for the better in air quality.
