LEHI, Utah — A dump truck driver was pronounced dead Tuesday after an accident at the Geneva Rock excavation site at Point of the Mountain.

Around 1:15 p.m., the driver was backing up a heavy-duty dump truck when the dirt underneath it gave way. The truck fell down the embankment and landed on its roof, killing the driver, according to Lehi Police.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Jared Payne of West Jordan.

In a Facebook post, the Copper Hills Youth Football league offered their condolences to the family of Payne.

"Our hearts are broken today at the sudden loss of Jared Payne. Coach, dad, husband, friend and fan will be sorely missed. Our love goes out to his wife and children."

"It is difficult to express the deep sadness we feel at the passing of our teammate," Geneva Rock spokesman Dave Kallas wrote in a statement. "Our hearts go out to his coworkers and colleagues, and especially to his family and loved ones."

Kallas said the company is fully cooperating with Lehi City Police Department and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as they investigate the incident.

The family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their loved one. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover expenses.
