WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — A teenage driver died Friday afternoon in a 3-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 189 near Deer Creek Reservoir.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the 17-year-old (identified Sunday as Jackson A. Keate of Highland) was driving a Honda Civic northbound near mile marker 24, about one mile south of Charleston, around 1:30 p.m. when his vehicle drifted off the right side of the highway. He overcorrected, going into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a Subaru Crosstrek.

The Civic then spun and was hit on the driver's side by a southbound Toyota Sienna minivan.

The teen was declared dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Subaru were uninjured, and those in the minivan were taken to area hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for about three hours.

UHP said it was unknown why the driver drifted off the road initially.
