Fatal accident overnight caused by driver going the wrong way on I-80

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A driver is dead after traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 overnight.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. near mile marker 133.

The driver of an SUV was partially ejected after hitting a semi truck head on. It is believed the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

That driver sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the semi was evaluated for injuries on scene, and was not transported to the hospital.

Three lanes of eastbound traffic were closed on I-80.

Crews are investigating why the driver of the SUV was traveling in the wrong direction.

The driver has been identified as 23-year-old Evan Thomas from Salt Lake City.
