SALT LAKE CITY — A passion turned into nightmare for a Utah family last Friday, but the community has stepped up to make sure they are secure for years to come.
An avid cyclist, Todd Wahl was riding through Park City on Oct. 9 when he was involved in a serious accident. While the accident did not involve another vehicle, Wahl's injuries were severe enough that he had to be transported by helicopter to the University of Utah.
Doctors found Wahl had suffered a broken back, neck, and sternum, leaving him a paraplegic without the use of his lower body or legs, according to his friends.
A project manager for a construction company, Wahl and his wife, Jessica, learned just two weeks ago they were expecting their second child next May.
With a new baby on the way and a 3-year-old son, Wahl's friends organized a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for the family. In just four days, the campaign has already raised over $86,000 of its $200,000 goal.
"Anyone who knows Todd knows he is the funniest, easy-going, honest guy who prides himself on providing and caring for his wife, Jessica, and 3-year-old son Nolan." says the GoFundMe page. "They have the sweetest love with no lack of healthy banter. They are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet."
After two surgeries, Todd remains in the surgical ICU and faces a long and costly rehabilitation process, which is why the GoFundMe is hoping monetary donations and prayer help them through tough times.
"If you know this family, you must also know that they are both fighters."
