SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities have arrested a man they say broke into the Scott M. Matheson Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City overnight.
Photos from the courthouse show one of the windows boarded up.
According to Salt Lake City police, Tayler James Tresner was apprehended after causing damage to several windows, doors, and computers inside the courthouse.
Tresner was arrested last week for throwing rocks and breaking windows at a Chili's in West Valley City. Police say Tresner waved down an officer Friday to help move his car out of the road after it ran out of gas. Since Tresner had no insurance, the car was impounded.
On his walk home, Tresner began throwing rocks at the Chili's at 3075 South 5600 West. Witnesses at first believed shots were being fired at the restaurant.
Tresner admitted to throwing the rocks, saying, "If I can't work then they can't either."
The damage to seven large exterior windows cost between $5,000 and $8,000 to repair.
Geoffrey Fattah of the Utah court system tweeted that damage to the courthouse is being assessed, but no one was injured.
