HUNTSVILLE, Utah — One person is dead after a car drove off the road and into the Pineview Reservoir in Huntsville Thursday.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to several calls regarding a reckless driver going up Weber Canyon, who at one point was involved in a hit-and-run incident just before 4 p.m.

When they arrived in the area, responders found the vehicle was submerged in the water. They also found two witnesses by the shore who had attempted to help the driver in the vehicle and were unable to get back up the icy embankment.

Rescuers used a harness and mechanical haul system to help the good Samaritans back to safety while also beginning recovery efforts for the driver in the submerged car.

After several hours, search and rescue crews were able to recover the adult male's body.

"A huge thank you to everyone involved," said the Weber Fire District in a social media post. "Our thoughts are with the family of the driver."

Investigators were unable to determine if the crash was intentional or not, the investigation remains active.
