SALT LAKE COUNTY — Two high schools in the Canyons School District will be returning to in-person classes Wednesday after a two-week online learning period, but with a change to help prevent another shutdown.
Alta and Brighton high schools made the switch to online late last month after a spike in COVID-19 cases in students and staff. Both schools had surpassed the district's 15-case threshold.
The district announced Monday night that the two schools will adopt a temporary split schedule when students return.
"It’s hoped this schedule will reduce the number of students quarantined after a possible exposure to COVID-19, better support physical distancing, and supplement existing contact tracing efforts," the announcement read.
The district said parents and guardians received information Monday on when their students would attend in person vs. online via Canvas.
The district said they hope for a return to a regular in-person schedule on Oct. 26, but added that if cases of the virus reach a "concerning level," they may continue with the modified schedule.
Extracurricular activities, including sports, will continue as scheduled in line with Utah High School Activities Association and health authorities' guidelines.
Anyone with questions should contact the district at communications@canyonsdistrict.org or 801-826-5000, or contact their individual school's main office.
