WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley City fire crews responded to a field fire Monday morning.

The fire at 3100 South Decker Lake Drive, near the Trax station, was reported around 8:30 a.m.

Gusty winds made it a fast-moving fire, but firefighters knocked it down after it burned about 1.5 acres

The area is normally more like a swamp, but was a raging field fire for a while.

The field is just north of the Maverik Center and is surrounded by a large apartment complex to the west and is very close to a Trax line and the Decker Lake station.

Firefighters say the very dry material and strong winds made for a dangerous combination.

“The reeds were probably 5 to 6 feet tall down in this marshy area, they’ve already started to dry out quite a bit really early this year because of the dry spring," West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Jed Peters said. "That coupled with the south winds really made it an early fire for the season.“

No structures were damaged and crews were able to protect some vehicles in the area that had been threatened.

There were no injuries and the cause is under investigation.
