A 5-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car while riding a scooter in Millcreek Sunday night.

It happened after sundown on Neffs Ln., which a Unified Police spokesman is a narrow, poorly-lit street. The victim was with his brother, who was riding a bike.

"We have another neighbor driving down the road, observed the young man on the bicycle off to the side, but did not see the young man on the scooter in the roadway. He was run over and he was killed," said Lt. Mike Schoenfeld, Unified Police Department.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police do not believe the driver was impaired.

This accident was tough for everyone, from neighbors to emergency first responders.

"It's obviously tragic for the families and the involved parties," Unified Police Detective Kevin Mallory said. "It's also hard on firefighters and first responders."

All day Monday, kids in the neighborhood went along the road and tied ribbons on trees and light posts to memorialize the 5-year-old who died.

"I’m pretty emotional about it. I didn’t even know this little boy," said Bethany Sheuermann, who lives a few blocks away. "Especially since we go biking all the time. My kids are the same ages. It's really sobering."

Police have not identified the 5-year-old and the family is asking for privacy during this tough time.
