SOUTH SALT LAKE — Eight people were transported to local hospitals Sunday after a vehicle collided with a TRAX train in South Salt Lake.

According to Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky, the vehicle was heading westbound on 3300 South when it struck the side of the train near 250 West. Authorities are not sure at this point if the driver drove through while the crossing gate was down. The crash is under investigation.

All eight injured were in the vehicle; five were in critical condition.

The collision derailed the train, which was northbound. No one on board was injured. There were a small number of passengers, and they were transported via bus.

The train is disconnected from power and is safe. One train will continue to run in both directions on the southbound track. The northbound track and 3300 South are expected to be closed for several hours.
