SALT LAKE CITY — A number of local organizations have joined together to distribute 20,000 free gun locks to prevent suicide in Utah.

Intermountain Healthcare and the Utah Shooting Sports Council, along with other businesses, will give out the locks and educational materials at hospitals and clinics.

Gun locks are considered to be a vital measure to prevent suicide, with firearms being the leading suicide method.

“Utah gun owners and gun groups are important partners in suicide prevention efforts, by working together we can make a difference in reducing death by suicide and unintentional injury through promoting and enabling safe firearm storage and education,” said Karlee Kump, Intermountain community health specialist.

Harmons Grocery will also distribute the gun locks through its pharmacies.
