SALT LAKE CITY — A man who police say was threatening people with a knife was taken into custody after hours of attempted negotiations at an apartment complex in Salt Lake City.

Officers initially responded to apartments in the area of area 1740 West 400 North at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, Delmar Castillo, 34, had pulled out a knife and threatened to kill an unidentified victim who was able to get out of the apartment building.

After being contacted by police officers, Castillo refused to come out of the apartment. He continued to stay inside even after SWAT team members and crisis negotiators arrived on the scene.

After hours of attempted negotiation, with no success, SWAT "safely entered the apartment and took the suspect into custody" officials updated just before midnight.

"No one was injured, there wasn't actually any physical violence," explained Detective Michael Ruff. "But those threats were made, which is an aggravated assault."

A large area surrounding the scene was closed off as officers worked to trIED and bring the situation to a peaceful end.

"This is something we train for on a daily basis," Ruff reflected. "Our officers are out here doing exactly what they're supposed to do and now we have our SWAT team out here who trains for these specific situations as well as that crisis negotiation team."
