Governor to address Utah tonight on COVID-19 surge

SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Gary Herbert will deliver an address to the people of Utah Sunday night to announce new restrictions to combat the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The address, planned to be broadcast at 9:30 p.m. will be on FOX 13. On Sunday night, an emergency alert was sent out by Utah's Department of Public Safety to millions of cell phones to urge them to tune in.

It comes as Sunday recorded 2,386 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death. This week, Utah has seen thousands of new cases and a death toll that has now reached 659. The state has re-worked a series of risk/restriction levels placing most of the state in the highest category that includes a mask mandate and caps gatherings at less than 10 people.
