VERNAL, Utah — There was a demonstration in Vernal Monday against kids wearing masks to school.

"We gotta fight fire with fire,” said one protester.

"Vernal is not going to be silent anymore," said another, in video provided by V6 Media.

The demonstration was organized by Bobby Oostveen, who doesn’t believe in masks or the science behind wearing them.

He and others argue masks cause emotional and physical harm to kids.

Oostveen went on a local radio station last week to promote Monday’s event.

He railed against the new Uintah School District Superintendent and the county commissioners, claiming mask mandates and business closures are illegal and take away personal freedoms.

The demonstration at the old county court house was peaceful.

The CDC recommends people two years and older wear a face covering to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The recommendation has the full support of physicians and the Utah Department of Health.

Governor Gary Herbert’s mask mandate for all Utah schools remains in effect.
