SALT LAKE CITY — In his monthly briefing, Gov. Spencer Cox announced Thursday that Utahns ages 65 to 69 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine immediately.

WATCH: Winter storms lead to temporary COVID-19 vaccine shortages in Utah

The move, which is possible because of the increase in doses delivered to Utah, comes almost two weeks before the planned age expansion of vaccinations.

Cox said the state has vaccinated 62 percent of eligible residents through Thursday morning. He added that the percentages in some counties are even higher.

As some counties have more doses available than others, Cox urges patience for those who are looking to get a vaccine appointment.

"We ask for your continued patience as this will flood phone lines and servers, and more and more people will be trying to sign up," said Cox.

The governor added that March 1 will remain the scheduled date for Utah residents with underlying medical conditions to become eligible for vaccination.
