WASHINGTON — The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning over a scam involving criminals sending legitimate-looking text messages to online shoppers about their shipments.

According to KTRK, the fake texts claim they are from the United States Postal Service and includes a link for shoppers to learn more about the status of their packages. However, officials warn consumers not to click on the link.

The FTC says the link will give personal information to scammers. Information such as social security numbers, bank account numbers and other private data that will swiped if the link is clicked.

The text should be deleted and reported to the FTC.

Experts say if consumers receive such a text from the USPS or any other shipping company, to reach out to the company directly before blindly following the message.
