EMERY COUNTY, Utah — A man is dead after authorities say he led police on a chase and pointed a gun at officers twice.
According to a press release from the Utah Department of Public Safety, the driver (whose name was not released) was pulled over when he pointed a handgun at an Emery County Sheriff’s deputy responding to reports of the man driving under the influence.
The man then reportedly got back in his vehicle and fled with the deputy in pursuit. He stopped after a Utah Highway Patrol trooper deployed spikes on the vehicle, then pointed the weapon at police again, according to the DPS statement. An Emery County deputy and a UHP trooper shot the man, who suffered fatal wounds despite officers and emergency medical personnel attempting lifesaving measures.
The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the incident per officer-involved critical incident protocol.
