WELLINGTON, Utah —  A man died during an “altercation” in Wellington that is being investigated as an officer-involved shooting.

Police identified the deceased Wednesday as 26-year-old Bobby Ray Duckworth of Wellington.

Wellington Police Chief Rory Bradley said a reserve officer responded to a suicidal man near 900 East and Railroad Ave. around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The scene of a fatal officer-involved shooting in Wellington.

“Mr. Duckworth sustained fatal injuries resulting from the altercation,” Bradley said.

Authorities declined to elaborate on that altercation or any other details regarding the incident beyond calling it an officer-involved shooting during Wednesday’s news conference.

“I’d like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased as well as our Wellington City officer and his family,” Bradley said. “This is an unfortunate situation for all involved.”

Authorities said there is body cam footage from the officer who was involved and it’s “clear” what happened. That footage is being reviewed and could be released as early as later this week.

The officer is a reserve officer in Wellington and works full-time with another department. That officer is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

An independent investigation into the incident is underway.
