Amazon to build massive new fulfillment center in West Jordan

WEST JORDAN, Utah — Amazon has announced plans to build another massive center in the Salt Lake Valley, and the company has some specific items in mind for what they'll the center will house and ship.

Up until now, the City of West Jordan would only mysteriously identify it as "Project Lonestar" in city council documents. It outlined plans for an 80-acre facility on the corner of Bacchus Highway and Old Bingham Highway.

On Monday, Amazon announced that it is the company planning to build a one million-plus square-foot fulfillment center on that lot.

The company said it would hire more than 800 full-time employees, starting at $15 an hour.

Amazon said employees at the new fulfillment center "will pick, pack and ship large customer items, such as sports equipment, patio furniture, fishing rods, pet food, kayaks, bicycles and larger household goods."

An Amazon spokesperson told Fox 13 Monday evening that the current Salt Lake City warehouse does not pack and ship those larger items.

The representative indicated that this new center could mean those items ship faster to Utahns.

According to our partners at the Salt Lake Tribune, the West Jordan City Council approved more than $1.6 million in incentives to bring Amazon to their city.

West Jordan City Council meeting documents explain that the city will also build a regional detention pond using 2020 stormwater funds.

In return, the documents state, the developer will invest and install $3.6 million in off-site water, sewer and road infrastructure that will be dedicated to West Jordan.

Seefried Industrial Properties is developing the project, Amazon stated.

The Amazon spokesperson told Fox 13 that there is no firm timeline for the project, including dates for groundbreaking or completion.
