PROVO, Utah — A man is dead after being hit by debris Sunday afternoon at Bridal Veil Falls.

The 23-year-old man visiting from Mexico was at the base of the first waterfall when something fell — a large rock or log — and hit him in the head, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

He was critically injured but died from those injuries, police said.

Initial reports were that the man fell, but after investigating police say he was more likely hit by falling debris. Investigators believe it was most likely a log.

Police also said they believe it was just a freak accident; they don't believe anything caused the rock to fall.

The victim's name will not be released until close members outside of the country have been notified, the sheriff's office said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
