West Valley City man drowns in Provo River

PROVO, Utah — Officials have released the name of a man who drowned in the Provo River Saturday evening.

Albert “A.J.” Mapa, 21, of West Valley City, had jumped into the water from a bridge near Olmstead Diversion Dam in Provo Canyon at about 5:30 p.m. and did not resurface.

Search and rescue crews responded and after a few hours recovered his body about 35 feet down the river.

Mapa had recently returned from a mission in Tonga for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
