PROVO CANYON, Utah — Utah County Search and Rescue came to the aid of a teen who slipped and fell near Bridal Veil Falls Wednesday.

According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the 17-year-old boy was hiking with a group of friends.

The group strayed from the trail before the boy slipped and fell about six feet and hit his head.

“My friend kind of veered a little to the left and then tried to come back right and lost his footing,” said Kesil Vega, who witnessed the accident.  “Smacked his head on the rock.”

A medical helicopter was able to get the teen down from the mountain.  He was later taken to the hospital by ambulance with a head injury.

Cannon said the boy is fortunate he didn’t suffer more serious injuries. He is expected to recover.

Cannon also said the teens did not have the proper equipment to navigate the steep and rough terrain off the trail.

“The safety message is don’t engage in activities that take you beyond your ability,” Cannon said. “If you are not trained or experienced in doing this kind of hiking or climbing, stay away from it.”

The teen was able to grab a rope that first responders believe prevented him from suffering a larger fall.
