RIVERTON, Utah — A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his pickup truck into an SUV after fleeing from police Sunday night.

The crash occurred near 13400 South on Bangerter Highway around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to Unified Police, things began around 7 p.m. with several reports the driver of a pickup truck was harassing several people on ATVs in the area of 6800 South and U-111.

When police pulled the man over, they located an open container of alcohol inside the Ford pickup truck. The man fled from that stop.

Police then responded to a crash near 13400 South and Bangerter, where they found the man had ultimately crashed into an SUV turning left onto the highway.

"Witnesses are telling us is that the pickup truck had been driving down Bangerter, basically slowing down for lights but blowing through red lights," said Sgt. Melody Gray of the Unified Police Department.

The driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is in "extremely critical" condition, police said, but the occupants in the other vehicle were properly restrained and suffered minor injuries.

Police said the man will face multiple charges for the pursuit and ensuing crash.

Southbound lanes of Bangerter Highway were closed south of 13400 for more than two hours as a result of the crash but have since reopened.
