SALT LAKE CITY — Police have arrested a man who they say assaulted another man Tuesday night, leaving him critically injured.

Mugshot: Anthony Chavez

Anthony Ray Chavez, 62, was booked into jail and faces aggravated assault and object rape charges.

Salt Lake City Police were called to Sunrise Metro apartments near 600 South and 500 West around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, where they found the male victim lying on the floor critically injured — bleeding profusely and with multiple injuries, including to his head.

Police said there was a trail of blood leading to Chavez's apartment.

"...They found our victim covered in blood—blood all over the apartment," said Lt. Dave Cracroft with Salt Lake City Police. "He had been beaten severely. That man was transported up to University Hospital. He is in very critical condition; he's in really rough shape."

Chavez later told police he and the other man had been in an altercation, according to the police report.

The Sunrise Metro apartments are subsidized housing for those who were previously homeless.
