CENTERVILLE, Utah — Centerville Police said a 5-year-old girl was hit by a car Friday morning.

It happened at 566 W 2025 N, near Reading Elementary, where the girl goes to school.

According to Centerville Police, the girl and her older sister were walking to school when she was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban going west on 2025 N.

Police said it appears the victim ran out into the road and into the path of the Suburban.

"The driver of the Suburban did not see the child but heard a thud upon hitting the child," a news release from Centerville PD said.

An off-duty deputy/paramedic who lives in the neighborhood was able to provide medical assistance before on-duty first responders could arrive.

The girl suffered a broken femur and an apparent brain injury, police said. She was taken by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition.

Police said the driver is cooperating with their investigation and they are looking for witnesses.
