SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah -- A suspect and a police officerhave both died following a critical incident Saturday in South Salt Lake.

According to Executive Officer Gary Keller with the South Salt Lake Police Department, officers were responding to reports of a burglary Saturday near 3500 S. West Temple.

Police made contact with suspects in the burglary, Keller said. The suspects attempted to flee the scene, hitting a police officer with the vehicle they were fleeing in.

Keller stated that an officer fired into the fleeing vehicle, striking one suspect and killing them. The second suspect continued to flee and at some point exited the vehicle.

The second suspect was later apprehended in the area, Keller said. He stated that all the suspects in the incident were accounted for.

"Right now it's a massive crime scene we're investigating," Keller said.

Keller stated that three crime scenes were being poured over by investigators. One was the scene of the robbery, the second was where a vehicle was located after a suspect fled and the third was where the second suspect was located by police K-9 units.

"One officer is in the hospital fighting for his life," Keller said, becoming emotional.

South Salt Lake Police later announced that Officer David Romrell passed away from his injuries.

The identity of the suspect who was killed was not released at the time of this report.
