SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah -- One person was slightly injured Wednesday morning in South Salt Lake in a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus and a van carrying special needs adults.
The collision took place around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of 3300 South and West Temple.
Investigators say a red pickup truck was eastbound on 3300 South and making a left-hand turn onto northbound West Temple.
The driver told police the sun was extremely bright and he never saw the Columbus school bus which broadsided him.
The pickup then spun out and hit a Granite School District school bus which was stopped at the light.
At that point a metal rod or pipe in the back of the pickup launched several feet away and into the windshield of a semi truck that was parked at the Maverik.
It missed the driver who was sitting inside the cab.
Incredibly there were no serious injuries and the kids on the bus were transferred to another bus.
It was all very upsetting to Monique Leonard who has a son in Kindergarten on the bus.
"I was pretty nervous," Leonard said. "He told me that he was fine but then I was wanting to double-check, have him double checked out again."
There were five special needs adults on the Columbus school bus plus the driver. No one was hurt.
The driver of the pickup was fine and after getting on another bus, the students eventually made their way to Roosevelt Elementary.
The driver of the semi truck was treated for some minor cuts from glass after the metal rod crashed through his windshield.
The crash is one of two involving school buses in Utah Wednesday. The other occurred in Eagle Mountain, where no injuries were reported.
