ST. GEORGE, Utah - A St. George man died Saturday morning when his ultralight experimental aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in St. George, the St. George News reported.
The man who died in the crash has been identified as 69-year-old Sterling Palmer of St. George.
He was taking off from St. George Regional Airport around 9:00 a.m. and his plane crashed shortly after taking off.
Palmer was killed on impact.
"Once we were aware of the crash, the runway was immediately closed down for operations, regular operations around the airport were still continuing we shut down the runway," SGU Regional Airport Spokesman Marc Mortensen said. "There were commercial flights this morning and they operated as normal."
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Board are investigating the crash to determine what went wrong.
