Quick thinking neighbors help evacuate apartments as fire burns in West Valley City

WEST VALLEY CITY - As soon as the smoke started to poke through the roof of the building, Dominique Johnson sprung into action.

"I was coming from the opposite direction," she said. "I ran through here and started banging on doors."

Through here is the hallways that separate 12 apartments in a West Valley apartment complex.

"I start the EMT academy in two weeks, so my first reaction is making sure everyone's okay," she added.

West Valley City Fire couldn't confirm what started the, but did say no one was injured.

"It's overwhelming," admitted Daniele Manwill, a resident. "Everything in our bedroom is gone."

Her apartment was one of the worst hit.

"I think we'll be okay. We just need to find a new place to live."
