WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A man died after crashing a car into a boulder in West Jordan early Thursday morning, and police say the man had fled from an officer shortly before the crash.

Later Thursday police identified the deceased as 21-year-old Suwipya Silas of Tuba City, Arizona.  Authorities say the man had recently come to the Salt Lake area for a job.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight Thursday at an intersection near 1300 West and 6600 South in West Jordan.

Witnesses tell police the driver was traveling westbound and went through the intersection, over the curb and impacted a landscaping boulder on the other side—where the T-shaped intersection does not continue.

Silas was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was killed on impact. Police say they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

West Jordan Police were the ones who responded to the crash, but they say a Sandy Police officer had attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle after the driver made an illegal U-turn a couple of miles east of where the crash occurred.

Police say Silas sped away from that officer, who did not pursue but put out a radio broadcast to other officers about the incident.
