Domestic violence incident turns deadly in Uintah County, investigation continues

VERNAL – One person is dead and another is seriously injured following a domestic violence incident  at an Uintah County town-home complex.

Around 10:40 Saturday night, deputies were responding to a family fight at the Canyon Villas Townhouses, located at 2425 West and 500 North in Vernal – witnesses told police they could hear some kind of physical altercation going on between a man and a woman.

UCSO said witnesses told police that the woman had ran from her home and began knocking on neighboring doors, looking for help.

The call was soon updated to a “shots fired” incident. According to UCSO, witnesses said the man went after her and shot her multiple times with a handgun as one of the neighbors was opening their door.

According to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, when they arrived on the scene, they found that woman inside of the neighbor’s residence, the neighbor was able to pull her inside of his apartment after she had been shot, until EMS crews could arrive.

UCSO said deputies were then diverted to the woman’s home, where it was believed the shooter had fled to.

After a short search at the woman’s unit, police found the suspect dead inside. UCSO said he had shot himself.

The woman was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. She was later airlifted to Salt Lake City for further treatment, according to police.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
