SALT LAKE CITY — A West High School student has been taken into police custody for allegedly bringing an unloaded handgun to school Thursday morning.

Salt Lake City School District spokeswoman Yándary Chatwin said another student at the school told a teacher about the boy with a gun.

The school's principal notified parents of the incident via email and automated phone calls.

"The important thing here is that a student saw something amiss and was able to report that to a teacher. A lot of times, students might be scared to share a tip like that, but we really commend that student for sharing the information they saw," Chatwin said.

According to Chatwin, the boy carried the handgun in his waistband and he did not brandish it at anyone.
