PRICE, Utah — A local state of emergency has been declared for Wellington City and unincorporated areas of Carbon County after a critical leak was found in the culinary water system.

According to declarations from Wellington City and Carbon County, the cost and magnitude of responding to and recovering from the leak is in excess of resources available to the city and county.

“This is affecting public safety, culinary drinking water, utilities, public and private facilities; and has agricultural impacts in an already declared drought disaster,” both declarations state.

The Price River Water Improvement District reported Monday that they have located a broken pipe about 30 feet underground, and workers have had some difficulty in repairing it.

According to a Facebook post from the District, there has been a cave-in at the repair site and an excavation company has expressed safety concerns.

“At this time we’ll need input from UDOT. We may still be at this for two days,” the post said.

The pipe repair has forced officials to close the right lane of southbound Highway 6 as crews bring in more equipment needed for the repair.

The District plans to set up water stations for affected residents who need fresh water.
