EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — A 16-year-old boy was flown to a hospital in critical condition Saturday after he was struck by an SUV while riding a bicycle and crossing Pony Express Parkway.

Sunday authorities said the teen has been transferred to ICU at Primay Children’s Hospital.

Sgt. Tyler Collet of the Eagle Mountain Division of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said dispatch was called about the crash around 4:45 p.m.

He said two teenage males on BMX bikes were traveling on a bike path that runs adjacent to Pony Express Parkway, and they crossed the street in the designated area where the path goes across the road.

One male crossed safely, but the second was hit by a passing Honda Pilot.

“We believe the juvenile did not see the vehicle as he attempted to cross,” Collet said. “The vehicle appeared to try to avoid hitting him, but struck him anyway.”

The teen was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital via LifeFlight in critical condition. Collet says he suffered head trauma and possibly internal injuries. Sunday police said the boy was transferred to ICU.

The driver remained at the scene after the crash.

“At this point we do not believe the driver was impaired or there was any malice,” Collet said. “We believe it was just an accident.”

The road was closed for about two hours as crews responded to the crash but has since reopened.
