CENTERVILLE, Utah -- A 9-year-old boy was taken to Primary Children's Hospital Saturday after he suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Von Steenblik, Assistant Chief with the Centerville Police Department, said the incident occurred in the area of 1180 North 225 West in Centerville.

Steenblik initially stated two boys were playing with guns when the shooting occurred, but he later said the shooting happened after the 9-year-old boy got hold of a handgun and other children tried to take it away from him.

"It appears that he was dropped off here by his grandma, he doesn't live at this home, this is other family members'," Steenblik said. "He went downstairs to a room where he found this handgun, and other kids that live at the home were trying to take the gun away from him when it went off and shot him in the shoulder."

The incident occurred at 6:43 p.m., police stated.

The 9-year-old was transported to Primary Children's Hospital. Steenblik said he was in "stable" condition.
